Flowers and Monsters - Slow Loris
A soft, and melodic hum evokes joy, innocence and a sense
of the sublime in the first ten seconds, only to commence a vibe-tastic jam
into a realm of chill. Wes Doyle (Slow Loris) softly speaks about an
ambiguous end(possibly of a night or week), but instead of a sad reaction, he is sitting by the window,
enjoying the breeze and the smell of the wind. From there he drifts into
nostalgic dreams, experiences and fantasies he once had as child. The
instrumentation absolutely complements Doyle’s conceptual vocals as the slow
beat creates a calm but also pensive mood that one can easily float into
thought. To recollect times that may have seemed insignificant but have come
into fruition as an impactful part of one’s life, while also thinking about those
spaced-out ideas that seem ludicrous and silly but are just easy to the brain
with no stress involved. A cacophony of things.
The guitar riffs…damn, those licks are tasty sweet.
The beat may set up the foreground for a trip, but the riffs take you this
way, that way; up and down; and side to side. The soft and hypnotic inflection
may seem a bit conventional and drawn out within this dream pop genre of music
but, when that halfway mark hits, the song changes and does something unique as
it ventures into a jam. There is a distortion that signals the change and from
there we are given a higher tempo to vibe with but after a handful seconds the
song converts into a psychedelic groove that goes in the vain of a
Dope Lemon or Dinosaur Jr track. However, the song returns to its original self
and finishes out with the soft beat and smooth plucks that we started out with.
The evolution, and the retreating style of this tune is a perfect
representation of venturing into a day dream after the end of a day, with nothing left to fret over, and you can just kick back and let your mind wander. You
may start with a hum, or a whistle, and your mind is set free to matriculate
into different thoughts and past experiences, only to return to your original,
pre-dream state.
I very much enjoy this song, and although the album Routine
Glow, in which this delightful song is featured on, was released in 2016, it is only starting to gain awareness as the popular YouTube channel “TheLazylazyme,” (by far the
best channel for music) published it on September 8th of this year.
