Just when we thought we got all we can from Courtney Barnett in 2018, a previously unreleased track, "Small Talk," is out from her  Tell Me How You Really Feel   sessions, taking  a step back into her narrative song writing previously seen in Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit  .  Tell Me How You Really Feel  was a very introspective and explicative collection of Barnett's innermost feelings of marginalization, depression, relationships and exhaustion, that saw her narrative-based song writing turn into a more direct approach to her themes. While "Small Talk" is an impressive song (reasons we'll get to later) its narrative structure does not necessarily align with  Tell Me How You Really Feel' s direct approach  to her feelings.  It is more akin to her debut album,  Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit,  although the instrumentals do show a resemblance, which is probably why it had been ...

The rise of a new wave of Feminism and the #MeToo movement has created some kick-ass and powerful songs that epitomizes the advocacy for justice of womyn who have been affected and marginalized by men, which exposes the limiting facets of the patriarchy and the strive for gender equality. Essentially, these songs deliver a message, particularly to men that this sexist shit isn't cool, and to even consider abiding by these cultural statures is offensive and demeaning. While we can all sing along with our favorite songs, sometimes verbatim, there are a few lyrics that stand out to us so much that we know by heart, and are lyrics that we end up singing the loudest or on the toilet because it's inescapable. Some artists are gifted songwriters and lyricists and are able to evoke incredible and often palpable emotions be it with a single terse verse or with wordy and long collective lines and that diversity is definitely apparent in the following list. Released in 2005 off Gorillaz's second and acclaimed album  Demon Days , "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head" is an overlooked and undercover track overshadowed by the album's multiple singles: " EL Mañana ," " Dirty Harry ," " Dare ," " Feel Good Inc. ," and " Kids with Guns ." While these aforementioned tracks are bangerz in their own right, and have credible influence, "Fire Coming out the Monkey's Head" is arguably one of the most unique songs Gorillaz has ever made, and that's saying something about the band of cartoon musicians.  Song writing takes many forms or styles, particularly laced with metaphors and expressions to not necessarily tell a story but to express an emotion or feeling. Now that we are roughly half-way through 2018, it's time to reflect on the songs that have impacted us this year. Like any year, there have been great some great songs and flat out terrible songs, but we're going to try and forget about those discrepancies and focus solely on the good ones. Normally, artists taking influence from the 70's incorporate smooth and lucid riffs, a soft/easy beat and a groovy bass line, akin to artists like The Grateful Dead and David Bowie . With MOD CON, and specifically the song in question, "Scorpio Moon," the 70's influence is undeniably related with the hard rock stylings of bands like  Heart . While undoubtedly taking influence from 70's hard rock,  MOD CON and their full-length debut Modern Convenience , finds themselves squarely fit into this New School of rock with the likes of  Courtney Barnett ,  Starcrawler  and  The Regrettes . Released on March 1st of this year, "All I've Got" is a groovy, future summer-banger track with production elements not too common with new-era-jive such as samples of distorted dialogue and reversed guitar loops. However, what is consistent and attainable from this song is the need to groove! Published on March 19th of yesterday on the ever so wonderful YouTube channel, TheLazylazyme , I found this track after being exposed to redundant songs for a week. Songs that just go through one ear and out the other without any distinction; just the common dreamy licks and soft vocals of the dream pop genre. It's not to say that it is really a bad thing, but so many bands and artists are using this formula which comes off as a copy rather than inspiration. I will say the new Courtney Barnett song, " Need a Little Time " is another interesting song to come from the upcoming Tell Me How You Really Feel. Courtney Barnett, the leader of the new school of rock, is back! Okay okay, so she had collaborated with Kurt Vile  on Lotta Sea Lice   in 2017, but this is purely Courtney Barnett as her upcoming album, which "Nameless, Faceless" is featured on, Tell Me How You Really Feel , is due to release on May 18th of this year, and that is super exciting. Barnett's, previous album Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit , was freaking sweet. Her ability to combine the singer-songwriter thing with core rock elements, to create jams with intricate and narrative-style lyrics that explored complex and worldly themes like cognitive dissonance or feeling unfulfilled were intertwined in stories like, a person wanting to be an elevator operator. The album was something unique in a boring phase of rock music, but was still able to be wildly entertaining, which is a pretty good mix if you ask me.
