Night Owl - Spooky Mansion

With a name like Spooky Mansion you know you're about to listen to something unique. "Night Owl" is off of Spooky Mansion's I'm the Moon, You're the Wave (so plz change w/ me),  which I came across through the YouTube channel (if you can't already guess) "TheLazylazyme." It isn't crazy madness like Dessert's "Devil" with its distortions and sloven screams, rather it incorporates an eerie undertone throughout the track with a very dry and monotone rap that flies on the surface. The bass, drums and synthesizer seem to act together to bring a-dare I say-spooky feeling to the listener that does very well to capture the strangeness of autumn. The changing of the leaves, the new chill of the air, the encroaching darkness that blackens each night just meshes well with this tune.

Let's talk about that rap. The premise of this song is as the title insinuates, the tale of a "Night Owl," but more specifically someone who essentially comes alive during the night time, but is incredibly apathetic and just not that great of a person. The character in question is just a selfish vagabond who matriculates everywhere for his or her own satisfaction, who says "fuck it," quite a bit. It's pretty cool that this rap of sorts is performed by woman as it changes the perspective of the manipulative prick, and the way she (It is not specified who exactly is spitting) does it sound like she's confiding in someone or a journal about the events of the evening, due to her confessional but casual manner. An honest telling, if you will.

I normally emphasize the guitar as I had in my previous blogs, however, "Night Owl" directs the focus on the beat and the ambient sounds that configure with the beat. I'd say the beat creates and directs the song; makes you bob your head and tap your foot, but the subtle guitar riffs heard throughout the song makes you sway your hips. The licks are like lightning striking in the song, it doesn't cause a scene but it's a colorful and impressive image in the vast sky. Not to mention it sounds like a Santana-esque riff that seems to belong in a grander love song, which is pretty fascinating. It does detract from the overall theme of the track but it is soft and easy on the ears. I think writing a paragraph on not emphasizing the guitar, inadvertently put a large focus on the guitar.

I believe this song does very well in expressing the oddity of not only a creepy night time excursion but in promulgating this spacious vibe as the rest of the tracks on I'm the Moon, You're the Wave (so plz change w/ me) do.

I also recommend, if you did indeed enjoy this track, to listen to "I'm the Moon," I think it takes this dark undertone and establishes a more mystical scene.
