25 - Fieh

We're changing the dream-pop style for some funk-inspired soul. "25" is a single from the 22-year-old Fieh, the head of a nine-piece band, that offers a jazz, funk-infused groove that gives off that finger-snapping, slight hip shake feel, while singing about being a boss-ass-bitch. Her song "Glu" is a similar 'bout regarding independence and not needing no man, but something more high-paced and to dance to, but "25" is a great track to kick it back to.

What about being a boss-ass-bitch? The lyrics to "25" is definitely few and far in-between but it is very efficient in the message it is evoking: concentrating on oneself to reach desired goals, and the person she's with has to either keep up or get out, "So don't come around try'na to tell me shit/You don't know shit 'bout how I am on it." The later repetition of "And you know" is to reiterate this strength of independence, and I think it is worthwhile to note that her jazzy voice has a sense of vigor behind each verse to explicate the theme of strength; it is intimidating in a great way. Her vocals are refreshing, it is not a bombarding high cadence that many singers attempt to instill in their songs. It is powerful, but it is not trying to show you how powerful it is, it is subtle, and works perfectly here to express her strength and stability that she is in control of her talents, voice or otherwise.

The band in this song is super groovy. The bass-line kicks it off to set the chill mood, before the drums, keys, trumpets and guitars glide in seamlessly to add a groovy melody. What I thought clever about this song was the idea of starting the song with the bass and ending it with the guitar licks. You get the impression that the bass acts as the stability and strength that is thematically expressed and the outro guitar solo is showing the variant of that vigor and how far it can reach, unapologetically as its bravado is emphasized in the chord progressions.

Apparently, according to 777tv, Sir Elton John himself digs this track, so if you don't take my word for it, I think Elton John is a pretty reliable source. If you want to check out more from this boss, check out these links:
