Mokase - Dream Coterie

Do you know that feeling you get when you're given the DJ role in the car? Not only are you ridden with anxiety but that first song you play is crucial and one of the biggest moments of your life. That song has to be perfect, it sets the mood for the drive, the rest of the day, and you are immediately judged by your supposed "buddy." Fortunately, you don't need to fret about that anymore because I have the perfect song for you to use, "Mokase."

Probably the coolest song of the year, Dream Coterie's "Mokase" is rife with what makes Dream Pop an incredibly lucid, evocative, chill and a badass genre. Taking a feeling and expanding on its facets allows for the genre to stand on its own and expand in popularity, and "Mokase" is a particular that follows this formula to an expert extent. Growing as a person while moving on from a relationship causes insecurities, mixed emotions and a general lack of consistency, which is a familiar experience and is clearly expressed not solely in the lyrics but the coinciding instrumentation.

The exasperated opening chords and simple finger-snapping beat creates the lucid and dreamy background that sucks in anyone listening from start to finish. This method is commonly deduced to the idea that this type of instrumentation is used to support someone with their "high" but this motif is better suited to bringing the listener into a visceral state to experience the artist('s) implication. Dream Coterie is able to bring the listener to their level with "Mokase" and what we have is not just a continued set of chords and soft vocals but changes in pitch, descending chord progressions, and times where the music fades in and out of assumed alignment. This evokes that idea of inconsistency within the theme of maturity and moving on, as many feelings and emotions are felt and expressed in a strange and scattered mess that isn't easy to orchestrate but Dream Coterie is able to make it sound beautiful. Similar to how we normally like to put on a pretty and confident facade when we are actually messed up under the surface.

The production is quite gorgeous and flows so pleasantly that each play of the song has you drawn into Dream Coterie's fabrication, without the common hesitation that is ever-present with replaying songs. It's real chill but isn't boring like other spacious songs tend to become. It's aesthetic is calming but the melody throughout gives the song the energy to be lively and more than just a song to get comfortable with.

Dream Coterie's debut titular album is dropping on April 2nd, and to what I can hope there will be more vibey shit to come. As per usual, check out these links and support the group's efforts:
