Stupid Songs - Alpharo

Shout out to YouTube's alona chemerys for posting another beautiful track...goddamn. "Stupid Songs" off Alpharo's debut EP, Stupid Songs, like many off the songs posted by alona chemerys, is sexy, groovy, dreamy, melodic and addictive (seriously). While falling somewhere in the dream pop genre, "Stupid Songs" stands out much like Feng Suave's brilliant "Sink Into the Floor." There is a soul, an empathetic sound to the collective of the track that is palpable allowing the listener to be engaged with Alpharo in his narrative.

Like so often with love songs and sentimentality, there's a lot of perplexity. There is no true coalescing of emotions as different feelings tend to arise simply out of nowhere and fade all together. Thus, is the nature of this song in its lyrics surmised by its lucid instrumentation that is so often accompanied with dream pop.

In speaking of its lyrics, "Stupid Songs" is something of a meta-narration commenting on the act and reason of writing stupid love songs. Because of that significant someone, and the sappy mess it tends to evoke. It is also a comment on the notion that the stupid love songs are not original and are generally stupid (re-stated to keep the consistency of the phrase).

What is really in the meat of the song is a bit scattered. We are treated to a linear story of sorts: Alpharo losing a love without ever truly expressing his love for the person, while never expecting to ever feel such deep feelings. However, that dopamine rush of love from love fades as soon as he mentions it, but the love was still there so he's willing to put that effort to find it again: "I'll move you over, put you close to my shoulder/So my heart can move around again."  Certainly palpable in its relation to love and in the closing remarks (also reiterated in the chorus) "A good reminder not to waste your time again/Just falling in love," is certainly advice to avoid the complications and multitudes of love, but as the song shows, there's no avoiding it.

Lyrically the songs is evocative without too much punch but with the lucid and dreamy instrumentation, the song becomes groovy and sexy as the popping bass, soft keys, slight tapping of the snare and dreamy guitar riffs make it impossible to sit still. The same can be said with the cadence in Alpharo's vocals. The raspy and seductive undertones behind his voice are set to sooth and lure its listeners into an arousing lull and keep them there to hear what Alpharo believes to be surrounding the themes of love.

If looked in the view of a stupid love song, "Stupid Songs" is pretty brilliant as it catches elements of a stupid love song: lyrics about love, melodic instrumentation and sexy vocals. Stupid love songs are simple and without too much artistic effort, and if that is the ironic intention Alpharo had then he has done good job expressing it. This notion is especially heard in the abrupt end to the song. It doesn't seamlessly flow into the next track "Bad Liar," so it comes off as odd, but again, if the intention is satire then it is impressive in its attention to detail.

Overall, "Stupid Songs" is a melodic and sexy track that is addictive in its lucid approach and serves as a good first effort for Alpharo. Proving to be an artist to keep tabs on for future listenings.
